Kanheri - Sopara

Overview

Kanheri - - A complex of caves carved into rock on the fringes of the bustling city of Mumbai.
However, around 2000 years ago, these caves served as significant Buddhist hubs where monks resided and engaged in the teachings of Gautam Buddha. The location is strategically positioned close to historic trade centers such as Sopara and Kalyan. This site was a vital center for Buddhist education for a considerable time.

While Sopara was an ancient port town, likely the largest on the west coast, it had trade links with Egypt, Mesopotamia, Arabia, and Africa. The town is also noted in the Mahabharata. Thus, the antiquity and significance of Sopara are of great importance.
Thus, this trail provides a wealth of information regarding the rich and long history of our culture, conveyed through the expertise of our scholar who has earned his doctorate focused on the Kanheri Caves.
