Ancient Nashik

Overview

Nashik like a fine wine has gotten better with time. Time as old as the Mythologies we worship. A land of cultural magnificence, history, and heritage.
According to mythology, this is one of the places where at the beginning of a Satya Yuga (Era) the Lord Vishnu himself dropped a few drops of Amrita (the nectar of immortality) creating the ground. This incidence made Nashik one of the holiest places in India and devotees, sadhus from all across the world gather at the banks of Godavari to get consecrated. This event also is known as Kumbh Mela.
It is the Panchavati region in Nashik where Lord Rama,Sita, and Laxman settled for a while during their vanavasa.
Apart from its name derived from the 9 hills which surround Nashik, It also has a name with a cheeky reference to the incident of Laxmana cutting of Shurpanakha’snose(Nasika), Ravana’s sister, in one razor-sharp blow.
In 1 st Century A.D.,Satvahana’s ruled all over Maharashtra region. And this place had gained the utmost importance then due to some major events occurred during their reign.
Yadavas, Buddhist, Mughals and the British all left their mark on the map of Nashik amidst the towering heritage of Ancient India.
All of this happened at the banks of river Godavari, which originates in the Bahmagiri mountain range at Trimbakeshwar. She is the second-largest and longest river in India which covers a distance of 1465km.
The Godavari is also known as the “Dakshin Ganga”, The Ganges of the south, from a holy and a geographical standpoint.
At the Shiva temple located in Trimbakeshwar, which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, a remarkable feature on its own, the Hindu genealogy registers are kept. While Nashik readily offers a look at the history of others, these genealogy registers give you an illuminating peek at the story of your own Ancestors.
The modern-day Nashik, might not be the IT hub the locals had hoped for but it has become the home of something more cultured.
In this curious tour of ours, we will walkthrough a number of interesting chapters of Nashik’s heritage spanning across thousands of years.
So let’s get going!
